Cadbury Bournvita Teachers’ Awards

From January 19-29 of 2007 I was invited by the Institute of Financial Planning, Insight’s West African distributor, to travel to Lagos, Nigeria, the most populated city in Africa. While there, I delivered a workshop at the Bournvita Teachers’ Awards Ceremony. The three-day workshop was the culminating event for 35 of the best school teachers in Nigeria. Over 5,000 teachers had entered the competition.

Cadbury-Schweppes established the Bournvita Teachers’ Awards in 2002 to promote and celebrate excellence in teaching. Award-winning teachers received computer equipment, cash prizes, Cadbury products, an award certificate, a copy of my book, “Standing Naked in the Shower: Life-Enriching Insights on Human Nature”, and a customized version of Insight’s “Discovering Your Personality Spectrum” and “Teaching in the Nexus” courses.

This year, the workshop was attended by a very special visitor, Dr. Iyabo Fagbulu, the National Program Officer for Education from UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). She was captivated by the content and believes teachers throughout the region would benefit greatly from exposure to Insight products, philosophies, and methodologies.

The Bournvita Teachers’ Awards program has received great acclaim from Nigerian teachers and the country’s media and government. All said the program has made a positive contribution towards enhancing teaching standards and the education of Nigerian children.

On a personal note, the teachers I taught are some of the most dedicated and passionate people I have ever known and it is a pleasure to work every year with so many great people who are willing to sacrifice their time, talents, and extremely limited financial resources to bless the lives of Nigerian students. Special thanks goes to Felix Akpe, the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Financial Planning, and his capable staff who worked to maintain my comfort and security while visiting Nigeria. In my opinion, Nigeria is a country filled to the brim with many, many honest people who are earnestly trying to make their corner of the world a better place.
